In April 2019 Hunza became the first district all across Pakistan to impose a ban on single-use plastic in households and retailer stores. The ban was imposed by the Deputy Commissioner district Hunza to contribute to Prime Minister’s national campaign on “Clean and Green Pakistan” and to safeguard the pollution-free natural environment of Hunza. However, the success behind this initiative lies in ensuring the availability of alternate/replacement biodegradable material to replace with plastic bags.
To sustain this initiative and to meet the growing market demand for biodegradable bags as an alternative to plastic. KADO stepped in to take tangible steps to provide alternate solutions/options to discourage the use of the unhygienic plastic bags to keep Hunza valley clean and pollution-free which falls under SDG-13. In Oct 2019, KADO won a project worth Rs. 25M from the District Administration Hunza to develop a sustainable model for the production of cloth and paper bags in the Hunza district.
The project also aims to provide livelihood opportunities to persons with disabilities and enable them to live with dignity and become active citizens of this country on which the Government of Pakistan has to achieve the targets set under SDG-8. The initiative will contribute directly to reduce the effect of Climate Change on mountain communities by reducing the use of single-use plastic in the region.
